  1. Great script. I remember Syd Field analyzed the first ten pages in his book "Screenplay."

Another Robert Towne film I really liked was Tequila Sunrise with Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell.

  2. Yea. I read Robert Mckee's book STORY a while back and he was constantly dissecting that. It was a good read. I haven't seen Tequila Sunrise. Will have to give that a once over one of these days. How's your scripts coming along?

  3. RE: Tequila Sunrise -- whenever it pops up on cable I'll always try and watch it. It's got a cool little film noir feel to it. More of a drama/thriller than an action movie.

I'm not having much luck getting my latest screenplay read (contained horror). Other than Benderspink, no one's requested it (and that was last summer).

I even subscribe to Hollywood Creative Directory online -- I can't tell you how many letters/emails I've sent to agents, managers, production companies. Hopefully the spec market will eventually turn around.

How about you? Are you having any luck?

  4. Yea that's too bad sorry. I'm not even trying to send stuff out write now. I've got a few that are good enough to and I few that I believe will be good but I want to just push through finish a couple more than start sending them out. I heard even the query system doesnt work anymore which is a shame because its like how the hell is an unrepresented person able to get an agent? BUt that's how it goes. As for the spec market, it will boom again. Hopefully soon though. If you look at some of the specs that sold in the 90s when it was booming we may not have some of our biggest writers today. JJ abrams sold his first screenplay at 23. A crappy little comedy and he continued to sell a couple more crap films before making Felicity.

  5. You're probably wise to hold off sending anything out for the time being. I think you almost have to know someone in order to get anything read these days.

Speaking of Abrams, I'm looking forward to Super 8 -- that looks like it could be really interesting.

  6. Yea super 8 does look good. I'm kinda hesitant on it tho because of how cloverfield turned out. I just wasn't a fan of the monsters. My father who's a casting director actually got to work for Bad Robot a while back. He said the production place was insane. They had so much going on and it was all very top secret...like keycard and password top secret.

  7. Now that would be a cool place to work. So what movies has your dad worked on if you don't mind me asking?

  8. He's mostly made his living off commercials. He's done over 500 over 30 years. In the past decae he's been ding alot more movies. Mostly Steven Segeil pics. He did one with Antonio Banderas called Ecks Vs Sever which was alright. And then another one called Half Past dead. Pack in the 90s one his films, Valerie Flake, got picked to attend Sundance.

But he was saying that BAd Robot was so cool. 3 levels security cards for every door.

  9. Bad Robot almost sounds like Area 51. I wonder if security is that tight because they're afraid of things leaking out onto the Internet?

So do you have any desire to go into casting like your dad (sounds like he's very good at it).

  10. BAD ROBOT: EYa it sounded like that. I dont know they're really cracking down on things like that. A couple months ago someone got fired from one of the big five agencies because they had a blog (but they werent even posting anything about work)

As for casting, no. He's great at it but I never could do it nor do I really want to. I love writing and telling stories. One day the goal is to write, direct, produce, and edit my own stuff. Editing is really cool and I like that alot.
